Its really more of how you play than where you finish. bad luck is bad luck.

No player can win all the time, even the top tv guys. The ones you see winning dont tell you about the hundreds of games they came nowhere. If you can regularly make final tables I would fear you more than a guy that maybe won one but did little else.

I will assume you mean a poker tournament.

You would be considered a good player is you won more than your fair share. If there are 9 players, then all things being the same you should win one out of nine times. So a good player would win one out of eight times. A great player would win one out of seven times.

In tournament situations, even the top Pros say they cash in no more than 15-20% of the tourneys they enter. Remember the object is usually to cash, not necessarily to win it all, although at the top levels play becomes so competitive that winning becomes a major objective.
In Table stakes or Ring games you should keep an ongoing chart of wins/losses and other stats which serves to track your progress. If you, over the course of time, maintain an overall positive result you’re a pretty damned good player. There will always be swings in your results. Remember that ALL players lose sometimes.

if you play large MTTs then results can be all over the place, you may win a huge 1st place prize one day and lose your buy in 20 other times… In sngs that you play, the safest way is to play 6 handed games or 9 handed. if you play them a lot then you should be making a profit once every at least 3 games. the best way to make money is to play cash games. these games can be tracked over time periods like 1 yr, 6 month as you’ll have good days, bad days, winning streaks and losing. i started at the 10c/25c level buying in for the maz. i played these for about 6 monts and moved up to the 25c./50. i played these levels for about a year. i have worked my way up the limits and each one takes getting used to. my initial deposit was $100 and every time i think im ready to move up, i take 25% of my bankroll out. im now a regular player at the 2/4 games and on occasion i play some 3/6, always 6 handed. My BR has reached upwards of $10,000 and is now floating around $9200. hope this helps and think about giving ring games a try. good luck man

Winning percentage can be pretty meaningless, especially if you manufacture a win streak by refusing to quit when you’re behind, and quitting whenever you’re up.

A good player will win most of the time, but it’s more about how much money you average taking home than how often you win. Also, there’s a difference between no limit and limit hold’em. No limit is easier to win without great cards because you can use betting strategy to take down pots where you don’t have the nuts. With limit, it’s harder to do this because you can only raise in relatively small increments, so you generally need better cards to win a hand.

I used to play the sit n go’s on PokerStars like you are talking about. I would say that I was in the money 35 to 40% of the time. I would play in anything from $1 to $10.

Then I found a much better sit n go to play. The 6 player. I played in anywhere from $10 to $50 and my winning percentage went up to a little more than 55%. Much better odds of winning on these tables and much better play.

If your playing for high stakes you’re a shark if you have a 5% return on your investment. so for for every 1000 dollars spent you make 50 dollars. middle stakes would require a return on investment of 15%. and small stakes would be 30+ %.

But for live games i would expect a good player to be pulling in bigger returns than that.

And if your an online player, you should be able to make those returns while playing more than 1 table at the same time. a one table shark with a 30% ROI isnt any better than a multi tabler with a 15% ROI.
